experiment

next to an unhealthy obsession with pyrite is my love for turquoise and gold together.

here's an start to an idea for some new pieces.  the execution worked well but i'm not happy with the shape, the way it hangs, and how it looks around my neck.  but it's a start.

the nerds in the vicinity requested a dopamine molecule.  it's not a very pleasing one (visually) and might be difficult to pull off but i think i'll give it a try.

forest bulbs

i'd like to try making bulbs like these but i'll be away for christmas this year.
i guess they could be used for non-holiday reasons.

more crochet

Last night i made another attempt at this crochet pattern i've been intimidated by from Knot Sew Cute, found here on Etsy. I think it's going alright ... although it's starting to wave a little which worries me a bit ... I've also started collecting acorn tops (little brown turd-like things, top right) which i think i might want to attach to some fuzzy felted balls of wool :)

pottery class

we received our first glazed pieces back this week. one of mine is so ugly i can't bear to look at it. the other is this narrow mug which turned out pretty cool.

the selection of glazes available to us are all food safe so the colours aren't as outrageous as they could be, but some of them are still pretty neat.  the rim and inside were painted with a glaze called "texture iron" and the bottom was dipped in black.  the mug itself is too narrow for me to like very much but i think i'd really like to do a set of tea cups in these colours.

sunday craft day

sunday is arts and crafts day!  last last (last?) sunday we picked ferns and other plants we don't know the names of from marcia's backyard and pressed them between pages of a phonebook. she brought them over today along with the antique papers she picked up from ruby dog--legal foolscaps from the 20's and 40's.

one of marcia's, in progress (above).  this plant emerged from the press really awesomely!

my finished piece, mounted on a silkscreened clipboard from the regional assembly of text.

the other one i made didn't turn out as cool as i expected.  i had high expectations because i love ferns, but now i think i only like them when they're alive.

after arts and crafts we went out for an indian food buffet.  marcia enjoyed the tandoori chicken for dessert and i ate 6958448 papadums.

yah, i wanna make this

Who wants to come over for thanksgiving dinner cuz i'm making this and it's gonna taste as good as this picture looks. I'm pretty sure i have that identical plate too.

my stinky armpits

i was checking up on the braid wednesday flickr group (because it's wednesday, in case you were wondering) when i noticed a link to a recipe for homemade deodorant:

i think i might give it a try.  i'm not a huge fan of the smell of tea tree oil (i.e. hippies and old people in a tiny bottle) and most recipes suggest you add it (for its supposed natural antibiotic properties) but this one doesn't!  Sounds like baking soda is the star of the show.  i may not add the Vitamin E oil.  I heard its topical effectiveness is contested and i don't want to buy an entire bottle of it.  HEY, anyone wanna lend me some vitamin E capsules?  ;)

now i just need to find shea butter and cocoa butter.  i think Capers would have those.  and while i'm there i'll sample the essential oils for something non-offensive and skin-safe.

dress project

So some of you know that I recently decided to commit to acting on words that come out of my mouth that sound something like, "I could make that myself."

I've had this linen dress i found on etsy saved in the back of my head for a while.  I think it's very doable and i love things that look like formless pregnant sacks.

My (mom's) sewing machine is mildly spectacular but I don't know if it's spectacular enough to let me get away with sewing some fine ruching like that.  Instead i was thinking i'd thread a thick elastic inside (or maybe two or three thin ones) and make a tie in the back where it can be adjustable.  Oh look at me, i'm so crafty.  Well we'll see if this works.  :P
